Welcome to our
Primary Literacy resources, created for Primary teachers by Primary teachers.
About Primary Literacy on EP
Designed for students in Year 5 and 6/Grades 4-5, we have 8 modules containing 10 lessons each. These cover Narrative, Poetry, and Persuasive and Informative Texts.
Complementing our contextual modules, we also have 58 Skills Lessons (and 25 Spelling Lists) spanning Punctuation, Spelling Strategies, Skimming & Scanning and Sentence Structure, so students can put into practise what they learn when they need it.
All of our resources were developed with Literacy specialists in close collaboration with our instructional design team.
Curriculum Alignment
The Skills Lessons are designed for students in
Years 5 & 6/Grades 4-5 and focus on core Literacy outcomes.
Each lesson is carefully crafted to support students in the development of their understanding of key literacy concepts and their ability to not only
analyse but create a range of text types.

Using these lessons in the classroom
Contextual Lessons
The contextual modules take students through the features of each text type and then lead them to create their own poems, narratives and explanation reports (etc). Aside from the obvious Reading and Writing strands, you will also find opportunities for Presenting and Speaking.
We realise that schools and students need to use EP in various ways. Thus, we designed these Primary literacy resources to be used flexibly.
For example, poetry is often considered a challenge to teach well – so some students might work through all of Module 1, from Lessons 1 to 10. Another group, however, might be more confident with poetry and choose to dip into the lesson on alliteration only. Another might want to focus on the Writing strand and choose to focus on a selection of the lessons.
These activities could be completed individually for homework, in small groups in the classroom, or as part of whole class instruction.
Literacy Skills
The
Literacy Skills are designed to complement the Contextual Lessons. For example, if a student is struggling with punctuation as they work on their Information Report, the teacher can focus on this area by completing some skills lessons on the use of capital letters or commas or apostrophes.
The Literacy Skills can also stand on their own. They make great daily starter activities or plenaries. They’re also perfect for regular homework. You can easily differentiate by assigning specific lessons to specific students.
A great way to use the
Literacy Skills resources is to create short quizzes for students to gauge their current level of understanding with each. The Quiz function allows you to do this and then assign individualised learning pathways for students who require help with specific areas.
And remember – all EP lessons are fully customisable. You can create and edit your own content for your local context and students. For example, you could assign an assessment on punctuation or word types from these lessons, swap out other poems, or adapt new lessons from the existing texts and content!
Literacy Analytics
Analytics on EP can provide you with invaluable data and insight on your students’ literacy knowledge & skills. Task and assessment data can help inform differentiation, planning and reporting on a regular basis.
- Teachers can use task data to decide on differentiated learning groups for lessons, and then use that data to ‘zoom in’ on common mistakes & offer small-group instruction.
- Collating key Literacy Skills resources into an assessment on EP can be a great way to assess students’ literacy skills. You can then test the same content again later that term and compare the students’ progress!
