Using EP’s mathematics Diagnostic Assessments for Australia

About the Diagnostic Assessments

Our Diagnostic Tests are intended to provide an indication of which year level your students are performing in regards to Numeracy. The levels available range from Level 5 to Level 10A.

All questions within the assessment are tagged with recommended lessons and their Australian Curriculum level, and all questions are automatically marked by EP.

Each assessment is set up to ask questions from each level beginning with the lowest, with each level being asked in a random order. Once completed, teachers are provided with a percentage breakdown of how students have scored against each year level.

Choosing which Assessment to use

Tests can be run as once-off diagnostics, but are most powerful when pre and post-tests are run and growth is measured.

3-Level Sub-Strand (30 Questions, 10 from each level)

These assessments will give you the most accurate data, but will take more time for students to complete. Use these assessments if you want to get the best estimate of student understanding at the sub-strand level. These are also the best assessments to use for generating remediation work, because all concepts are tested.

A good way to use these assessments is to spread them throughout the year, running them before and after each sub-strand is covered in your curriculum as a pre and post-test. This will also allow you to generate a Growth Report by comparing the results in EP.

3-Level Strand (30 Questions, 10 from each level)

These assessments will give you accurate data for a single strand. Use these assessments to get a good estimate of student understanding at the strand level. These can also be used to generate remediation work, but not every concept is tested, so there will be some gaps.

A good way to use these assessments will be to run them prior to report writing in order to assist you in determining each students’ progression points. Running these prior to mid-year and end-year reporting will allow you to generate a Growth Report by comparing the results in EP.

3-Level All-Strands (36 Questions, 12 from each level)

These assessments will give you the least accurate data but will take less time for students to complete. Use these assessments if you want to get an overall indication of student capability across all strands in one test. Running these more than once a year will allow you to generate a Growth Report by comparing the results in EP.

3-Level All-Strands (30 Questions, 10 from each level, fewer Statistics and Probability)

These assessments are like the 36-Question tests but have fewer questions from the Statistics and Probability Strands. Use these assessments if 36 questions are too many, and you want to get an overall indication of your students’ capabilities across all strands in the one test.

How to interpret the data

Once students have completed the assessment, you can view their results and data in the Reporting tab of the Assessment. You’ll see data for each level, as well as each different topic.

This data is available at both a class and an individual student level.

data shown once a test is completed

Additionally, we have provided spreadsheet templates that you can copy your sub-strand or strand data into. These spreadsheets will then estimate a progression point for each student. They can also provide you with growth data if you enter pre and post-test data.
